Assignment 15A: Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2

Since I am back up in Gainesville, I was not able to get as good of people to interview as last time. If you did not read my last post of buying behavior, I was back home and asked people as I was out kayaking which gave me a pretty good idea of their buying behavior. Since I am back in Gainesville, I resorted to talking to a few people that were renting kayaks/canoes at rec sports. All 3 of them had their own kayaks wherever they lived previously but they didn't want to bring them to college for obvious reasons. Begin with alternative evaluation   After talking to all 3 of these people, I found out that they mostly care about the price and quality of the kayaks and their parts. Since these are college students, I was not surprised at the fact that the price was a large factor they considered when buying a product for their kayaks. One of them did however say that the quality was a large factor for him because he said that you're already going to be spending a dece...

Assignment 14A: Halfway Reflection

Image
1)  Tenaciousness is a competency.  What are the behaviors that you have used (or developed) to keep up with the requirements of this course? I think the hardest obstacle I had to overcome was procrastinating the work. I have work on the weekends so I typically have to do the work ahead of time or else I won't have enough time to thoroughly read the prompt and respond to it. Another behavior I have developed is that I have to start looking through a smaller scope rather than looking at the big picture all the time.   2)  Tenaciousness is also about attitude.  Talk about a moment or two when you felt like "giving up." What pulled you through? Do you feel like you've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months? What experience or experiences most contributed to this? I think this whole year in general has taught me to have a more tenacious attitude towards life because it has hit hard this past year. Juggling school, work, family issues, and sti...

Assignment 13A: Reading Reflection No. 1

Grinding It Out: The Making of McDonald’s, Ray Kroc 1) You read about an entrepreneur: What surprised you the most? It surprised me to know that it was not Kroc's idea to start the company or even had any part of it.  What about the entrepreneur did you most admire? I admired that he was able to see an opportunity that the McDonald's brothers weren't able to see.  What about the entrepreneur did you  least  admire? He could've included the McDonald's brother in the empire that he created because it was their idea. Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it? Kroc encountered a lot of products that he tried to sell which didn't quite work out too well but he kept trying new items and seeing what the outcome was.  2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited? The biggest competency that Kroc had was his sales experience and ability. He also had a lot of determination and pride in and fo...

Assignment 12A: Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

1) Segment: Coastal kayakers/stand up paddle boarders  2) Find 3 interviewees:    Since I went home last weekend, I was able to take the kayaks out on the water for some fishing and decided that I would conduct my interviews with people that I didn't know rather than some of my friends/family members. Two of the people I interviewed had fishing kayaks and the third had a stand up paddle board. We spoke as we were on the water waiting for a bite so I was able to talk to them at length about their preferences for the product as well as how they would go about buying such a product.  3) Need awareness:    I think the best place I could have conducted these interviews was at the marina/on the water because the need was so prevalent in that time. They had their kayaks stuffed with equipment and seemed to not even have enough room for themselves let alone all of their gear. It's harder to go fishing on a stand up paddle board so he didn't have nearly ...

Assignment 11A: Idea Napkin No. 1

1) You: I bought my first kayak when I was 14 years old and would take them in the lakes near my house. Once I got a little older I started taking them to the beach and mangroves and eventually out into the ocean. I use them for many different occasions such as cruising and fishing so I know a lot bout the different types of kayaks and their uses. I think If I were to start this business concept, it would be more of a hobby rather than a full time job. 2) What are you offering to customers?     I am offering my customers the luxury of more space and fishing capabilities to have on their kayak trips. Many people can think of things they would like to bring on the trip but can't because of weight or space restrictions. My product fixes these issues as well as offers additional benefits such as the waterproof speakers and live well. 3) Who are you offering it to?     My main market would be the kayak community but could be exten...

Assignment 9A: Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Interviews: 1) My roommate Caleb    Caleb has a kayak that he uses to go fishing with so when I told him about the idea that I had come up with, I thought he would be really interested. He said that even though the product might be useful to others, it wouldn't be of much use to him. He has a fishing kayak which is more flat and has ore storage space than a typical kayak. This allows him to have all the room he needs for his gear. 2) My friend Mika    Mika has a canoe that she likes to take out frequently into the everglades to go fishing or paddling with her grandpa. Throughout the interview she kept restating that you can fit a lot more things inside a canoe than kayaks can without making them unbalanced. She suggested that the product might not suit as many people that use canoes as I previously thought. 3) My Godfather Todd    Since Todd owns both a boat and a few kayaks, he only takes the kayaks out on the water when he's going for a short pad...

Assignment 8A: Solving The Problem

The Kayak Party Pack     One of the biggest problems people have with a typical kayak is the lack of room on board. Whether you are using the kayak to go fishing or just having a day out on the water, there is always a need for more room. This lead me to come up with the Kayak Party Pack. Basically this is like a smaller kayak that you clip on to your main kayak and tail behind you as you paddle. The Kayak Party Pack is equipped with a live well that can turn into a cooler, extra dry storage, waterproof speakers, rod holders, and paddle clips. The pack is versatile enough so that it covers a broad customer base and has everything necessary for your time out on the water. If you are using the kayak for fishing, the live well, rod holders, and dry storage will be very useful. If you are using the party pack for a cruise, the cooler and extra storage will help keep your phone and other belongings dry. Overall, I think a lot of different people would be interested in this ...

Opportunity: Sit-on-top kayak users are unable to fit all necessary and trivial belongings on their kayaks due to limited space on most standard kayaks on the market.  Interviews: 1) My brother Nick    My brother and I have owned kayaks and used them for multiple different reasons whether it be to go fishing, take friends out on a day trip, or just have a calm paddle through the mangroves. He pointed out that another group of people that might have this same problem are stand up paddle board users. He also said that the items needed on board would be different for everyone. As for why this need exists, he shared my view that there just isn't enough space on standard kayaks on the market. 2) My friend Andrew     One of my friends that typically comes with me and my brother is my friend Andrew. He owns a fishing kayak which is more geared towards fishing and has more room than a typical sit-on-top kayak. He said that even with a little mo...
