Assignment 13A: Reading Reflection No. 1

Grinding It Out: The Making of McDonald’s, Ray Kroc

1) You read about an entrepreneur:
  • What surprised you the most? It surprised me to know that it was not Kroc's idea to start the company or even had any part of it.
  • What about the entrepreneur did you most admire? I admired that he was able to see an opportunity that the McDonald's brothers weren't able to see.
  • What about the entrepreneur did you least admire? He could've included the McDonald's brother in the empire that he created because it was their idea.
  • Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it? Kroc encountered a lot of products that he tried to sell which didn't quite work out too well but he kept trying new items and seeing what the outcome was.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited? The biggest competency that Kroc had was his sales experience and ability. He also had a lot of determination and pride in and for the products he sold.
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you. I didn't understand why Kroc wanted the same exact product and process throughout every store he opened.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why? I would ask him what it was about the original McDonalds that made him want to expand it and grow it into the company it is today.
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion? I think Kroc was the type of person to put in as much work as he could and took pride in it. I am the same way in the sense that I will do whatever it takes to get the job done effectively.

  1. I watched a movie on Netflix about the McDonalds owner Ray Krac. The desire and tanacity that he used in creating McDonald's is something that has inspired me for a long time. The way that Ray feigned for success was overwhelming and has taught me to use those same traits for getting things done.

  2. Hi Nolan, thank you for your post. In my post I also wrote about Ray Kroc. I agree with your post in that I think that Ray Kroc should have included the McDonald brothers in the business because they helped grow the business. I think the brothers were taken advantage of and that they deserved better. I do agree with you in that he was able to see something that the McDonald’s brothers weren’t able to see, however I think he went about it in the wrong way.
