Assignment 7A: Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Opportunity: Sit-on-top kayak users are unable to fit all necessary and trivial belongings on their kayaks due to limited space on most standard kayaks on the market.

Interviews:

1) My brother Nick
My brother and I have owned kayaks and used them for multiple different reasons whether it be to go fishing, take friends out on a day trip, or just have a calm paddle through the mangroves. He pointed out that another group of people that might have this same problem are stand up paddle board users. He also said that the items needed on board would be different for everyone. As for why this need exists, he shared my view that there just isn't enough space on standard kayaks on the market.

2) My friend Andrew
One of my friends that typically comes with me and my brother is my friend Andrew. He owns a fishing kayak which is more geared towards fishing and has more room than a typical sit-on-top kayak. He said that even with a little more space, it still is a tight squeeze because of all the fishing gear he needs to bring. He said that even tho there isn't a lot of room, the kayaks need to be able to float and be sturdy while also cruise at a decent speed.

3) My friend Anna
Another one of my friends that comes with me when we go to the North Miami mangroves is Anna. She agreed that there needed to be more room on the kayaks especially when we go for extended periods of time. She said that its hard to fit regular belongings and things like food and water in order to stay hydrated while out on the water.

4) My dad James
My dad has only been out with me a few times because he isn't really a fan of the water and tipped the kayak because of how heavy we made it. He mentioned that canoes have more space but still might be a consumer of a product that increased storage on the canoe. As for the space on the kayak, he said that different people will have different needs for more space but that it is needed.

5) My Aunt Michelle
My aunt lives near the water as well and has a few kayaks that she takes out for sunset when its cool. She says that she finds that the kayak has enough space for everything she needs but she also said that she doesn't bring too many belongings with her. She only paddles for about an hour or 2 so she doesn't need to bring a lot with her.

Overall, I think everyone generally agreed that there is a large need for more space on a kayak. They also mentioned other people who might need a product to increase space are users of paddle boards, canoes, and fishing kayaks. They also said that there are many reasons that additional space is needed which expands the consumer base even further. As for the why,  everyone agreed that there either isn't enough room to begin with, or they need too many items.

Comments

  1. Hi! I also kayak regularly, mostly on rivers in northern Florida. I have had issues with having enough space in my kayak as well. My family has a two man sit on top that has no storage at all. When we try to fish out of that boat there are tackle boxes and poles everywhere. And because it is a sit on top everything gets soaked. It is a real issue and I think you are onto something with this opportunity.

  2. I've never kayaked so I'd never thought about this problem. Have you considered wearing a backpack when you kayak, or is that already a thing? The actually need for space and different things to bring seems pretty varied. This is an interesting problem.
It doesn't quite look like you answered the 'who, what, and why' part of the assignment, although your interviews pretty much cover part 3 of the assignment. Nice summary- very to the point.
