Assignment 9A: Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
Interviews:
1) My roommate Caleb
Caleb has a kayak that he uses to go fishing with so when I told him about the idea that I had come up with, I thought he would be really interested. He said that even though the product might be useful to others, it wouldn't be of much use to him. He has a fishing kayak which is more flat and has ore storage space than a typical kayak. This allows him to have all the room he needs for his gear.
2) My friend Mika
Mika has a canoe that she likes to take out frequently into the everglades to go fishing or paddling with her grandpa. Throughout the interview she kept restating that you can fit a lot more things inside a canoe than kayaks can without making them unbalanced. She suggested that the product might not suit as many people that use canoes as I previously thought.
3) My Godfather Todd
Since Todd owns both a boat and a few kayaks, he only takes the kayaks out on the water when he's going for a short paddle around the intracoastal. Other than that, he uses his boat to bring friends out on the water or go fishing. He said that he doesn't need a product like the one I have come up with because he only takes a few things with him when he goes kayaking.
4) My friend Jordan
Jordan's only experience on kayaks and other self-propelled boats has been with me on my kayaks so he sees that the kayaks don't have too much space. Even though he sees this, he said that there's simpler options such as using a backpack to stash things away. He said that not too many people would want to spend money on another boat like piece just to stash their items in.
5) My friend Colton
Like Caleb, Colton also owns a fishing kayak. He says that he does need more room on his kayak for things like tackle and a place to store his fish after they have been caught but he makes due with the room that he has and only takes necessities. He said that he would buy the product if it were decently cheap for his longer trips but would probably use other methods.
What the Need Is Not: An accessory that is needed in order to go kayaking.
Alternative Explanations: Not everybody has a need to bring a cooler with a lot of food and drinks or a need for excess storage.

Hey Daniel, I thought your article was both effective and efficient. While I never got into kayacking, the general idea of efficiency is always one that can be improved one way or another and I am sure if you're writing about it you know your stuff. Great job, you should keep it up Daniel.
ReplyDeleteHey Daniel,
ReplyDeleteI go down to the Florida Keys often and whenever I am down there I always either stand up paddle board or go kayaking. I have a storage problem that you speak of there is never any space to put all of my gear, forcing me to go out on the water lacking things I would like to take. I think the speakers are also a nice touch.
I don't know much about about kayaking so it's interesting to see how many people go kayaking in Florida. Maybe think about/include what else you might have learned from the interviews other than why they don't want your product. Maybe the product would be appealing to them if they were cheap (like the one person said) or visually appealing.
