Assignment 27A: Reading Reflection No. 3
Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Peter Drucker
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
As the title suggests, this book went into detail about innovation and entrepreneurship in different types of businesses from small start-ups to large well established companies. Towards the beginning, Drucker spoke about how innovation brings new products to the current market or can even create a market in and of itself. These innovations can be brand new scientific discoveries or the restructuring of a certain process. He also spoke about how in order to start your own business and be an entrepreneur, you need to know how a business runs and how to effectively manage it. Lastly, he provided guidelines so to speak on how entrepreneurs should go about starting and maintaining their business.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
One of the things that Drucker spoke about was the necessity to analyze opportunities which was one of the first things we did in this class. I never realized how important it was to look around you for things that you would and could change because there are so many simple fixes that no one else has thought to come up with. I have seen so many products on the market that are just so simple yet they are selling like crazy.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
If I were to create an exercise based on this book, I would have the students come up with a list of 10 products that have seen on the market in which they fix a simple day to day need. I would have them dive a little bit deeper into the products and try to identify the opportunity that their producers saw. I would then have them identify who the market segment targets for each product.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
This book honestly followed very closely to this class which surprised me a lot because it followed the same sort of path that this class has taken us on. There wasn't really anything that stood out to me too much because of the fact that we have learned and implemented a lot of the things Druker spoke about in our posts.
Daniel,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great book and I also read it earlier in the year for one of my earlier reading reflections. Innovation is very important to the business world, sports, and for human civilization. Without innovation being average would be acceptable which isn't. As humans we need to keep moving forward.
Hi Daniel,
ReplyDeleteI think that it is interesting that you chose a book about entrepreneurship rather than a simple autobiography. When I read Makers: The New Industrial Revolution, my reaction was quite similar to the reaction you had to your book in the sense that the concepts that I learned about mirrored that things that I have learned in this class. While entrepreneurial lessons aren’t spelled out in the book, after taking the class it’s easy to see the lessons I learned in class applied in real life.
